Codes of Communication
Today we are used to the newer technological advances that once revolutionized the process of communication and allowed for collaboration and cooperation across long distances. The media of communication transformed from the beginnings of pictographs written on stone, to the introduction of the alphabet and other language systems, the Gutenberg printing-press in the 15th century and finally to the invention of communicating via controlled waves and electronic signals.

The media of communication transformed from the beginnings of pictographs written on stone, to the introduction of the alphabet and other language systems, the Gutenberg printing-press in the 15th century and finally to the invention of communicating via controlled waves and electronic signals.
Current forms of communication through media such as digital pictures, graphics, sound and writing have formed new ways of mobility and flexibility to convey messages around the globe. Digital media provide for artists new tools of creative expression, new practices of collaboration and a broader and faster forum of communicating with their audiences. Text and image messaging or i chats via the internet are now common ways of interaction and are considered an important source of circulating information and ideas. Electronic images and text solely rely on vision. Artists use these new visual effects originating in signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, color and electronic resources to express their ideas and inform with greater power.
Besides the presentation of text, pictures, diagrams, photos, etc., there are a variety of other ways to present information visually such as gestures, body language, video and television. The presence of camera equipment on computers and mobile phones as well as other video and TV devices simulate real time activities and environments. Long distances as well as the lines between public and private areas have diminished into virtual chat rooms and market places. Exploring video communication, its environs and advances artists juggle with ideas concerning place, identity politics, public and private scale. It opens questions of human interaction, relationships, isolation, reality and fantasy, and emerges on a whole new field of media psychology.
